An email from Amy Matthews Rockingham's 2013 Face of Breast Cancer

All,

I have spoken you most of you and I would like to ask for your help with spreading the word to get more individuals to join ourRockin Hams team! I live in this county, but do not work in a large organization to spread the word.  I need your help in doing that!

I understand budgets are tight right now for the institutions, it is tight everywhere.  So when your place of work can not sponsor the team, I really understand.  But one thing we CAN do is commit to have 25 or MORE people from your individual place of work that join the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on May 4. They do not even have to come to the race.  I know a lot is going on in our community that day.  They can join as virtual walkers.  We need to have awareness brought to our community to understand what this affiliate is doing for US right here in Rockingham County.

Rockingham County Health Alliance has gotten TWO grants from Susan G. Komen Northwest NC in the last year.  That grant has enabled our county to provide free mammograms to people who may not be able to afford one and therefore probably would not get one.  We all know how important that is to have a mammogram.

I was only 39 when I found my lump, I was too "young' to start getting mammograms.  If I had not had a way to pay for a mammogram...I may have waited or not gotten one.  Before I was diagnosed, I had no idea women my age were getting breast cancer at the alarming rates they are.  If I had not gotten that mammogram, I would not be here.  By the time I had my mammogram, my lump was 5.5 cm, very aggressive and had spread to my lymph nodes.

Honestly, until now,  I had NO idea we had a local Susan G. Komen Affiliate that was raising money and putting 75% of it back into the 11 counties they served.  I had walked in the Race for the Cure for two years...I just assumed it all went to research.

The more people we get to join the team, the more awareness they will have with this LOCAL affiliate and what they are doing locally.  That means ultimately MORE money raised for the affiliate...which could directly mean more money for services in our county. Imagine the possibilities.

I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me and to read this email.  I hope you will help me and getting more people to at least join the team and learn how we can work together to maybe save a life of a mother, wife, family member, friend or daughter.

 A mammogram saved my life.

Thank you!

 Amy Matthews
